South Florida has three overlapping moving seasons, and they don't line up with the rest of the country's. If you have any flexibility on your closing date or lease start, shifting by two weeks can cut your bill, get you a better crew, and dodge weather risk. Here's the honest calendar.
Peak season: October through March
This is snowbird season — retirees and part-time residents flooding down from the Northeast and Midwest into Broward and Miami-Dade condos and rentals. Combine that with pleasant weather and end-of-year home closings, and you get:
- Booking lead times of 3–6 weeks for weekend dates
- Peak-season surcharges from some companies (5–15%)
- Condo freight elevators booked out weeks in advance in Aventura, Sunny Isles, and Hollywood Beach
- The best weather — 70s and low 80s, low humidity, low rain
If you have to move during snowbird season, book six weeks ahead and pick a mid-month weekday if you can. Tuesday and Wednesday morning slots are typically the least contested.
Shoulder season: April, May, and late September
Our favorite months to move in South Florida. Snowbirds have gone home, hurricane season is either not started (April/May) or winding down (late September), and moving companies have real availability. Weather is warm but manageable — mornings are comfortable if you start the crew at 7:30 AM.
- Booking lead times drop to 1–2 weeks
- Weekday hourly rates are typically at their lowest
- Condo elevator reservations are much easier to get
Summer: June, July, August
This is the tricky window. It's also the busiest nationwide moving period (school schedules), so moving-truck and crew demand pushes local availability tighter. Locally, you have three issues to plan around:
- Heat and humidity: Afternoon heat index regularly hits 100°F. We start crews early (7–8 AM) and take structured water breaks. Plan to leave AC running at both ends of your move.
- Afternoon thunderstorms: Nearly daily from mid-June through August, typically between 2 PM and 6 PM. We wrap furniture in extra plastic and shrink wrap, but a hard afternoon storm can pause loading for 15–30 minutes.
- Hurricane season officially begins June 1 and runs through November 30, though the highest-risk months are August–October.
Hurricane season: what actually happens
Most South Florida moves during hurricane season go off without any weather issue at all — but you should know the drill. When a named storm enters the Gulf or Atlantic with a South Florida cone within 5 days, we work with clients to:
- Move up the date if the schedule allows
- Reschedule to after the storm passes if we're within 48 hours of landfall
- Store belongings in our climate-controlled facility if you can't take delivery yet
Our contract includes a no-fee reschedule for named storms within 5 days of your booked date. Most reputable Florida movers do — verify this in writing before you sign.
The cheapest weeks of the year
Based on our actual booking data, the lowest-cost moving weeks in Broward County are:
- The two weeks after Labor Day (early to mid-September)
- The week between Christmas and New Year's (surprisingly quiet locally)
- The last two weeks of April
- Mid-week in early May
The most expensive
- Last weekend of the month, year-round (leases turn over)
- First weekend after New Year's (snowbird arrival peak)
- Weekends in late June (school-year transitions)
Our recommendation
If you can pick your date, aim for a mid-month Tuesday, Wednesday, or Thursday in April, May, or late September. You'll get a better crew (top movers are less likely to be on their fourth job of the week), a shorter estimate window, and the best chance of a smooth, dry, on-time move.
